As of the census of 2000, there are 69,543 people, 24,896 households, and 19,518 families residing in the city. The population density is 750.4/km2 (1,943.7/mi2). There are 26,417 housing units at an average density of 285.1/km2 (738.4/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 84.35% White, 6.97% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.93% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 4.97% from other races, and 2.37% from two or more races. 18.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. Deltona History:
Deltona was laid out originally as a retirement community in 1963. The area grew very rapidly between 1970 and 2000. It grew so fast that residents decided to incorporate it into an official city on 31 December 1995. Due to the population of homes with two or more vehicles, Deltona has a higher than average accident rate for the national average.
